## 7 Common Types of Wood Lathe Machines

Discover 7 common types of wood lathe machines with our comprehensive guide including centre types, bench types, vertical types, turret types, automatic types, copying types, and CNC types.

### What Is A Wood Lathe Machine?

Woodworking has become fun and easy using modern machines. Nowadays, different models of woodworking machines are available on the market. These tools have made the job more controlling and offer better precision with fine finishing.

A [wood lathe](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/ "Wood Lathe") is a power tool that fixes a workpiece on a rotating spindle and is usually used for machining cylindrical workpieces. General wood lathes are equipped with various special tools, which can complete inner and outer circle processing, drilling, threading, cutting groove, end surface processing, outer circle, drilling center hole, turning hole, reaming hole, turning cone, turning forming surface, knurling, coiled spring and other processing procedures.

Wood lathe machines are used for shaping wood. They are also used for crafting symmetrical objects, spindles, and furniture components. These machines are popular among professionals and hobbyists as well.

### How Does A Wood Lathe Machine Work?

A wood lathe machine works combining rotation, cutting tools, and skilled craftsmanship together to shape wooden objects into beautiful designs.

The lathe is driven by an electric motor, and the spindle is rotated through a belt and gear transmission system to drive the workpiece on the spindle chuck to rotate. Then, the lathe is fixed on the tool holder for turning. The main workpiece is a round rod. The work includes turning the end face, inner and outer diameter, arc, taper, drilling, boring, eccentricity, embossing, cutting, grooving, and threading.

So, the basic working process is determined in 3 steps. They are,

✔ The rotational movement of the wood piece at a controlled speed

✔ Fixing the cutting tools ( gouges, scrappers, parting tools) properly

✔ Removal of the material and shaping the workpiece into a smooth finishing object

Due to the development of the industry, the actual work requirements are increasing day by day. To adapt to the trend of various processed products and modern automated processing to meet the needs of production, a variety of different functions and characteristics are developed:

### Centre Wood Lathe

Centre lathes are the most widely used type of lathes. In the early days, the transmission of ordinary lathes was driven by a belt-transmitted tower wheel. Today, gear transmissions have been used. The advantage of the gear transmission is that it can accurately grasp the speed of the main shaft, and there is no situation where the speed of the main shaft is too high, the friction of the belt is consumed and slips. Because the main shaft is placed horizontally, it is also called a horizontal lathe. If the bed surface is notched, it is a notched lathe machine.

### Bench Wood Lathe

Bench lathe machines are also called tabletop lathe machines. Their type and structure are similar to centerwood lathes. They are usually installed on work tables and named after them. They are suitable for the production of precision measuring tools, instruments, and small parts.

### Vertical Wood Lathe

The main axis of the vertical lathe is installed vertically, the bed is horizontal, and the workpiece is placed on the rotatable bed. Especially suitable for processing workpieces with large diameters but short lengths.

### Turret Wood Lathe

A Hexagon lathe, also known as a turret lathe, is designed to replace the tailstock of an ordinary lathe with a hexagonal rotating turret. Especially suitable for processing a large number of workpieces in various processing procedures (such as drilling, reaming, and boring), suitable for mass production.

### Automatic Wood Lathe

The automatic lathe can automatically turn according to the processing order of the work. After turning, it will automatically retract the tool, feed it, and turn the next finished product. It is suitable for the mass production of small-diameter workpieces.

### Copying Wood Lathe

Copying lathes, also known as imitation turning lathes, use the stylus to move according to the shape of the model or template, and the turning tool also moves the turning work, so the same workpiece as the model can be turned correctly.

### CNC Wood Lathe

The full name is "computer numerically controlled wood lathe", referred to as "CNC machine tool". The advantage is that it is suitable for processing large quantities of workpieces with complex designs and high precision requirements.

### Buying Considerations!

Buying a wood lathe machine is a profitable investment. These machines have changed the course of wood crafting. Woodwork is now faster and easier with wood lathe machines. Yet, before buying a machine it is wise to follow a few considerations. It will increase the chance of growing the business or fulfilling your projects within affordability.

Before purchasing your CNC wood lathe machine,

1\. Determine the purpose and your project size.

2\. Consider the power and speed of the machine. A machine with a variable speed is more capable.

3\. Consider the lathe's capacity, including the distance between centers and swing-over bed.

4\. Look for a sturdy, well-built lathe made from durable material.

5\. Check for additional features like tool rests, faceplates, and chucks.

6\. Set a budget that balances your needs.

### Which of the Seven Still Matter

The seven classic types are a useful history lesson, but a woodturner shopping today can quietly set several aside. Vertical and turret lathes are really metal-shop and mass-production machines you will almost never meet in a wood studio. That leaves the practical field much smaller: a bench or centre lathe for hands-on work, and the CNC lathe for automated work. A centre lathe is simply the classic horizontal machine that holds a blank between a driven headstock and a tailstock, the shape most people picture when they hear the word lathe, and a bench version is the same idea shrunk onto a tabletop. The old automatic and copying types have not disappeared, though; they have simply been absorbed into the modern CNC wood lathe, which turns, copies, and repeats from one program. That convergence is good news for a buyer: instead of shopping seven categories, you are really choosing between two, then picking a size and spindle count. When you browse the [CNC wood lathe machines](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/ "CNC wood lathe machines"), you are really looking at those three older types rolled into one.

### Manual or CNC: The Real Fork

Once the list narrows, the decision that shapes everything is manual versus computer control. A manual [benchtop lathe](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/mini-wood-lathe-for-wood-turning.html "benchtop lathe") is inexpensive and immediate, rewarding skill and giving the hands-on pleasure many turners love, but every piece depends on the operator and repeats are slow. A [single-spindle CNC lathe](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/best-cnc-wood-turning-lathe-machine.html "single-spindle CNC lathe") trades some of that romance for consistency: it follows a saved profile, so the fiftieth leg matches the first, it runs while you do other work, and it needs far less turning experience to get a clean result. Craft and one-offs lean manual; production and matched sets lean CNC. A good rule of thumb: if you sell your time and your hands, buy manual; if you sell finished quantities, the machine that never tires pays for itself. Many shops keep a manual lathe for prototypes and touch-ups even after a CNC arrives, since the two answer different questions.

### Matching a CNC Type to Your Output

CNC is not one machine but a small family, sorted by how much identical output you need. A single spindle suits varied, made-to-order work. A [twin-spindle lathe](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/Double-axis-automatic-cnc-wood-lathe-for-baseball-bat.html "twin-spindle lathe") turns two identical pieces at once, ideal for baseball bats and pool cues, while copy and multi-spindle machines carry several blanks side by side to push identical batches higher still, the modern descendant of the old copying lathe that once traced a physical template. A three-spindle copy lathe, for instance, triples output from one operator without tripling the floor space or the payroll. When output needs to run with minimal hands on it, a [self-feeding lathe](https://www.stylecnc.com/wood-lathe/automatic-feeding-cnc-wood-turning-lathe-machine.html "self-feeding lathe") loads, turns, and ejects blanks on its own. Pick the configuration by the size of your order book rather than by the price tag alone, since an underpowered choice caps your growth and an overbuilt one sits idle. The table below shortcuts the match.

Pick your type by the goal:

| If You Want To... | The Type That Fits |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Turn one-off art by hand | Manual bench or centre lathe |
| Repeat spindles and legs accurately | Single-spindle CNC lathe |
| Make matched pairs like bats or cues | Twin-spindle CNC lathe |
| Run large identical batches | Copy or multi-spindle CNC lathe |
| Keep volume running with little labor | Self-feeding CNC lathe |

**Choosing a lathe type checklist:**

✅ Match the type to your volume, not just your budget.

✅ Choose manual for hands-on, one-off craft.

✅ Choose CNC for repeatable, faster output.

✅ Add spindles for matched pairs and batches.

✅ Add self-feeding only when volume fills the day.

To use a CNC wood lathe: prepare a straight, square blank slightly longer than the part, clamp it between the drive chuck and tailstock center, position the steady rest under any slender section, load or draw the half-profile in the controller, run a roughing pass to round the blank, then a finishing pass along the programmed curve. Most problems trace back to blank quality, support, or blade condition rather than the program.

A CNC wood lathe turns square or round stock into finished profiles automatically, tracing a CAD drawing instead of a hand-held gouge or physical template. Axis count decides capability: single and double axis machines produce round spindles fast, while 4-axis machines with a carving spindle add flutes, spirals, and surface carving in the same cycle.
